As of 10/31/22 I have been a Psychiatric Social Worker for 55 years.

I opened my private practice in Brockport, NY in 1985. As of September, 2022 I have been serving the mental health needs of people in the Brockport community for 37 years.

1968-1976

Kings Park and Rochester Psychiatric Centers

Began as a Psychiatric Social Worker Trainee II , completed a Master's Degree, and obtained increasing responsibility as a clinician and clinical manager. Worked on the admission wards as well as with chronic patients on adult and psychogeriatric wards, and on the childrens' unit.

1972-Present

University of Rochester, SUNY Brockport, and CW Post Extension of Long Island University

Taught as an adjunct professor various courses at various times. 

  • At University of Rochester I taught Principles of Professional Practice for four semesters, Group Counseling for three semesters to students in the Community Services curriculum. 

  • At CW Post I taught one section of Abnormal Psychology to Master's level students in a distance learning program for CSEA employees at the Rochester Psychiatric Center.

  • At SUNY Brockport, in addition to my full time work in 1979-1980 where I taught Human Behavior and Social Environment for the Social Work department, I have also taught Mental Health in the Health Sciences department for two semesters in the fall of 92 and the Spring of 93. In the Fall of 1999 I taught Social Work Methods I and Family Life. In Spring Semester, 2000 I taught Social Policy I, Mental Health, and Family Life.

1972-Present

Workshop and Seminar Speaker

I have given many workshops and seminars over the years to diverse audiences on a wide variety of mental health and human service topics. Most recent workshop topics in 1999 and 2000 have been: "Assessment and Intervention With Violent and Aggressive Youth" for Monroe County Youth Bureau and Americorps staff, "Effects of Popular Culture On Youth" for St. Louis Parish in Pittsford, NY, "Collaborative Therapy" for Schyler County Mental Health Staff, "Personal Experience With Restorative Justice" for Niagara University Criminal Justice Graduate Students, and "Collaboration in Community Based Settings" for The Health Association staff at their annual staff retreat. I also speak regularly at DWI impact panels and at the Victim Awareness Program at Orleans Correctional Facility several times per year.

1972-1990

Rochester General Hospital, Genesee Hospital, Park Ridge Hospital

Provided mental health and substance abuse evaluations to patients medically cleared in the emergency departments of those three hospitals. Patients were all ages: children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric.

1976-1979

Genesee Mental Health Center

Worked as a Primary Therapist on the inpatient psychiatric unit, became the director of the Partial Hospitalization Program, and worked as a Psychiatric Consultant to the Emergency Department of the hospital. Services were provided to adults, children, adolescents, and their families.

1979-1980

SUNY Brockport

Worked as an Assistant Professor in the Regional Education Center of the Social Work department. This position involved providing workshops on various Social Work topics and teaching credit courses in various social service agencies in an eight county region. I also supervised a field unit of three students in Orleans County at the Department of Social Services and the Department of Mental Health. This position was funded with Title XX money and this position, along with several others, was cut when the funds ran out.

1980-1990

Park Ridge Mental Health Center

Increasing responsibility as a clinical manager for a decentralized outpatient site and eventually became the Director of Clinical Programs for the whole agency. Facilitated the obtaining of JCAH Community Mental Health Center accreditation for the first time.

1985-Present

Private Practice

General private practice providing services to adults, adolescents, and children. Participates on the panels of most HMO and insurance companies.

1992-1999

The Health Association

Worked as the Deputy Director for Program Operations for a 12 million dollar nonprofit agency which has programs in the areas of substance abuse treatment and prevention, mental health services, and other services to people with disabilities. Has major responsibilities to design and monitor the implementation of quality assurance, program evaluation, and continuous quality improvement systems in the agency's diverse programs. The last 24 months the majority of time has been spent as the Acting Director of the MAIN QUEST Treatment Center which is The Health Association's 152 bed substance abuse treatment program which has a budget of 7 ½ million dollars and a staff of about 150. This program involves a 40 bed detox unit, a 44 bed inpatient rehab unit, 4 community residences, 28 supportive apartments, and a 10 therapist outpatient program at two sites.

1999-2000

Private Practice and teaching part time at SUNY Brockport

Executive Director of GCASA

GCASA (Genesee Orleans Council for Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services). This agency has two outpatient clinics, four satellite offices, one 16 bed community residence, 8 supportive apartments at 3 locations, a crisis service serving a general hospital and two county jails in Orleans and Gensee Counties in Western New York State with a population of about 110,000 people, and an EAP program with about 55 contracts with various businesses and organizations. The agency also has about 13 prevention/education workers. The agency budget is about 3 million and has approximately 75 employees.
